IBE Events and Activities at LAEC 2024

The International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE) is planning some exciting activities at the 13th Latin American Epilepsy Congress in collaboration with ILAE, which takes place from 15th to 18th June 2024 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

We’re very excited about the upcoming Latin American Epilepsy Congress and have been working hard to plan some focused activities for people affected by epilepsy and IBE Chapters in the region. IBE will be well-represented at the congress by Dr Alicia Bogacz from Uruguay, our Vice-President for the Latin American Region. There will be a strong presence from the local IBE chapter, Sociedad Dominicana Unidos Por La Epilepsia (SODOUE), as well as representatives from many other chapters travelling from all over the Latin American region.

Our new Engagement Officer, Eli Cripps, is looking forward to connecting with our community in Latin America, and IBE’s Vice-President for the European Region, Elvira Vacas Montero, is eager to strengthen ties between the two regions. We are also thrilled that delegates from our Community Council will be joining us in Santo Domingo, as well as members of the Latin American Youth Team, and 2024’s Golden Light Award Winners.

Kicking off our activities is a workshop, organised by the WHO Collaborating Centres in Chile and Honduras. Here, the multi-stakeholder participants will be introduced to the WHO’s 10 Year Intersectoral Global Action Plan on Epilepsy and other Neurological Disorders  (IGAP). The aim will be to collaborate in defining regional priorities, designing interventions/solutions and promoting exchange of best practice. IBE is supporting the participation of people with epilepsy and their caregivers in this workshop, whilst also providing our training tools and resources to support this policy advocacy work.

We will be hosting a workshop before the congress on the topic of Women and Epilepsy. This continues to be a major focus for IBE, and it will be incredibly valuable to hear the perspectives of women with epilepsy and their caregivers and families in Latin America so that we can better understand their greatest challenges and needs across the lifecourse. Our attendees include women with epilepsy, family members and caregivers of people with epilepsy, healthcare professionals, and IBE Community Council members. We hope to come out of the workshop with some shared perspectives and actionable goals to improve the lives of women affected by epilepsy in Latin America.

On Saturday, IBE will be opening up the congress to the public for a day of talks and activities focused on improving the lives of people with epilepsy in the Latin American Region. With a diverse range of presentations aimed at a public audience, from Epilepsy and Art, to Self-Care for Caregivers, to updates on IBE’s work in the region, we’re looking forward to hearing from some brilliant speakers. Wrapping up the day, we are delighted to present the 2024 Golden Light Awards, the winners of which are Francisca Sepúlveda from Chile, Delfina Varela from Argentina, and Adriana Rosales from El Salvador.

Our regional chapters will be attending the IBE Chapter Convention to learn more about the work of IBE in the Latin American region, but also to present their own work, to share best practice, offer peer to peer support, and to network.

Eventos y actividades del IBE en el Congreso Latinoamericano de Epilepsia 2024

El Bureau Internacional de Epilepsia (IBE) planea algunas actividades interesantes para el XIII Congreso Latinoamericano de Epilepsia en colaboración con la ILAE, que tendrá lugar del 15 al 18 de junio de 2024 en Santo Domingo, República Dominicana.

Estamos muy entusiasmados con el próximo Congreso Latinoamericano de Epilepsia, y hemos estado trabajando duro para planificar algunas actividades centradas en las personas afectadas por la epilepsia y los Capítulos del IBE en la región. El IBE estará representado en el congreso por la Dra. Alicia Bogacz de Uruguay, nuestra Vicepresidenta para la Región Latinoamericana. Habrá una fuerte presencia del capítulo local del IBE, Sociedad Dominicana Unidos Por La Epilepsia (SODOUE), así como representantes de muchos otros capítulos que viajan desde toda la región latinoamericana. Nuestra nueva Responsable de Participación, Eli Cripps, espera mucho conectarse con nuestra comunidad en Latinoamérica, y la Vicepresidenta del IBE para la Región Europea, Elvira Vacas Montero, está dispuesta a fortalecer los lazos entre las dos regiones. También estamos encantados de que los delegados de nuestro Consejo Comunitario se unan a nosotros en Santo Domingo, así como los miembros del Equipo Latinoamericano de Jóvenes y los ganadores del premio “Golden Light” 2024.

El inicio de nuestras actividades será un taller organizado por los Centros Colaboradores de la OMS en Chile y Honduras. En él, se presentará a los participantes el Plan de Acción Global Intersectorial de la OMS sobre Epilepsia y otros Trastornos Neurológicos (IGAP). El objetivo será colaborar en la definición de prioridades regionales, diseñar intervenciones/soluciones y promover el intercambio de buenas prácticas. El IBE está apoyando la participación de personas con epilepsia y sus cuidadores en este taller, al tiempo que proporciona nuestras herramientas y recursos de formación para apoyar esta labor de promoción de políticas.

Organizaremos un taller antes del congreso sobre el tema Mujeres y Epilepsia. Este tema sigue siendo uno de los principales para el IBE, y será increíblemente valioso escuchar las perspectivas de las mujeres con epilepsia y sus cuidadores y familiares en Latinoamérica, para que podamos entender mejor sus mayores desafíos y necesidades a lo largo de la vida. Entre los asistentes se encuentran mujeres con epilepsia, familiares y cuidadores de personas con epilepsia, profesionales de la salud y miembros del Consejo Comunitario del IBE. Esperamos salir del taller con algunas perspectivas compartidas y objetivos factibles para mejorar la vida de las mujeres afectadas por la epilepsia en Latinoamérica.

El sábado, la OIE abrirá el congreso al público para un día de presentaciones y actividades centradas en mejorar la vida de las personas con epilepsia en la región latinoamericana. Con una amplia gama de presentaciones dirigidas al público, desde Epilepsia y Arte hasta Autocuidado y el Cuidador, pasando por actualizaciones sobre el trabajo del IBE en la región, esperamos escuchar a algunos oradores destacados. Para concluir el día, nos complace entregar los premios “Golden Light” 2024, de los que han resultado ganadoras Francisca Sepúlveda, de Chile, Delfina Varela, de Argentina, y Adriana Rosales, de El Salvador.

Nuestros capítulos regionales asistirán a la Convención de Capítulos del IBE para aprender más sobre el trabajo del IBE en la región latinoamericana, pero también para presentar su propio trabajo, compartir las mejores prácticas, ofrecer apoyo entre pares y establecer contactos.
